How Mobile App Development Works: From Idea to the App Store and Google Play
If you have an app idea but do not know how the process works, you are not alone. How long does it take, what are the stages, how does it get into the stores? Here are the steps an app goes through, from idea to launch on the App Store and Google Play, in plain language.
1. Idea and scope
The first step is to be clear about whose problem the app solves. Then the features the first version must have are defined. Instead of putting everything into version one, starting with a version that does the core job well (an MVP) protects the budget and lets the app grow based on real user feedback.
2. Design and prototype
Screens are first sketched as simple wireframes, then turned into a clickable prototype. Trying the app on a phone and changing the flow at this stage is far cheaper than changing it once the code is written.
3. Development
An app has two parts: the app on the phone and the server side where data lives (API and database). With technologies like React Native, iOS and Android apps can be built from a single codebase, which significantly reduces cost and maintenance. The same backend can later power a web panel or website too.
4. Testing
Before being submitted to the stores, the app is tested on real devices:
- TestFlight is used for iOS and Google Play testing tracks for Android
- Different screen sizes, OS versions and poor connections are tested
- Newly created personal developer accounts on Google Play must run a closed test with a minimum number of testers before publishing
5. Store preparation and launch
The stores review every app. To avoid rejection, have these ready:
- Apple Developer (yearly fee) and Google Play Console (one-time fee) accounts
- App name, description, screenshots and icon
- A privacy policy and the stores’ data disclosures (App Store privacy labels, Google Play data safety form)
- If users can create an account, a way to delete it from within the app
- A test account so reviewers can sign in
6. After launch
Launch is not the end. New iOS and Android versions arrive every year, and the stores require apps to stay up to date. Error tracking, user feedback and regular updates keep the app in the store and its ratings high.
A well-planned app project runs without surprises. Tell us your idea; we will clarify the scope together and prepare a step-by-step roadmap and a transparent quote.
