Mobile App or Mobile-Friendly Website?

Mehmet Salih YaldızMehmet Salih Yaldız · 13 October 2026 · 5 min read

“We want a mobile app” is a common request. But not every business needs an app; often a good mobile-friendly site does the same job for far less. Here is when each option makes sense.

  1. When a mobile-friendly website is enough
  2. When you need a mobile app
  3. A middle option: PWA
  4. Cost and maintenance
  5. The right order

When a mobile-friendly website is enough

If your goal is to present your business, explain your services and collect enquiries or quote requests, a good mobile-friendly site is enough. Users do not have to download anything, it can be found on Google, and one codebase works on both phones and computers.

When you need a mobile app

An app really makes a difference when:

  • Users will use your product daily or several times a week
  • Push notifications are central (order status, appointment reminders)
  • You need deep access to device features such as the camera, location or Bluetooth
  • It has to work without an internet connection

A middle option: PWA

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a website that can be added to the home screen, opens like an app and can send notifications. On iPhones, PWAs added to the home screen can receive notifications too. It is a good middle ground if you want an app-like experience without going through the app stores.

Cost and maintenance

Unlike a website, a mobile app involves App Store and Google Play processes, developer accounts (a yearly fee for Apple, a one-time fee for Google), updates for every new iOS and Android version, and store review. Technologies like React Native, which build both platforms from a single codebase, reduce this cost significantly.

The right order

For most businesses the right order is: first a fast, well-built website, then, once there is a real need, a mobile app that reuses the same backend. That protects your budget and lets you design the app around real user needs.

Having an app is a means, not a goal. Tell us what you want to achieve and we will tell you honestly whether you need an app or a good mobile website.
